Sweets & Treats Shower

I helped host a Sweets & Treats shower for my sister yesterday. We're a big sweet tooth family, so I felt like a sugary shower was perfect for her. I have talked about these pom poms before & decided to make them myself. And it was easy peasy! In the middle of fluffing the tissue, I didn't think they were looking so hot - but once they're up, they look pretty good! On the table, we put out Ball jar favors filled with confectionery goodness and I made picture-wrapped chocolate bars, via Martha of course. That Martha - she sure can whip up some great ideas for a party. It was such a fun party. Really though, how can you wrong with sunshine, candy, cupcakes & champagne?!

From the Desk Fridays: The L&H 2010 Calendar

With next week beginning the month of September, I thought it might not me too early to unveil our 2010 Calendar. I know, I know, we haven't even gotten to Halloween yet. And while we're not Party City who starts stocking its shelves with costumes in June (!), I do know that people think ahead with their calendars and gift-giving. And we thank you for that!

So here it is - our letterpressed 2010 Calendar. This year, we've added a twist that we're hoping will help encourage you to write more letters. The reverse-side of each month has an area to write a post card. At the end of each month, you can cut, write & send a quick note. I had to make sure that both the month and the post card format worked - cause what's the point if you're left with an ugly post card? And because you'll send the post card after the month has passed, I designed each month to be more seasonal and less month-specific. So no stars & stripes in July or orange & black in October. I find the result is kind of refreshing, actually. I'll go to Party City if I want to be clobbered over the head with ghosts & goblins.

Hope you like!

Have a great weekend.

WSJ: A Manifesto for Slow Communication

Great article from last weekend's Wall Street Journal on the attributes of good old fashioned handwritten communication. Cheers to that!

Tags: Face Lift

I decided that our tags needed some more color, some more pizazz. And since I'm the boss:) I decided to switch up the ribbon from twine to double-faced satin. We use the same ribbon for our annual calendar (stay tuned for the launch of 2010 on Friday!) and I love the contrast of the shiny ribbon and the matte finish of letterpress.

Stationery Social, Brooklyn NY

A couple weeks ago, Katie & I attended a wedding stationery social hosted by Jillian from 100 Layer Cake. It was so much fun meeting people face to face - in a great place & with yummy treats.

A big big thanks to Jillian for putting it together and encouraging us all to meet beyond the computer screen.

See more photos from the event here.

We're dog sitting another energetic lab this week. This iphone shot from earlier this morning is post-Dog Run & it's the only one that wasn't completely blurry. Maybe we won't rush into getting another dog quite yet:)

From the Desk Fridays: Stationery for Baby Olivia

I just finished this stationery set for my dear friends who had a baby girl last month, Olivia. I love that the stationery is sweet enough for a baby but not too cutesy or baby-baby. The fuchsia envelope was Olivia's mom's idea and I love love love it.

Timex 80 Love

I don't wear a watch - but I'd wear one of these Timex 80s in a heartbeat. My older & much hipper sister has the orange one and I loooove it. I can't seem to find them here in the US, so I might have to have one sent to her in London. I'm thinking yellow. Kinda Lance-like, but yellow's such a happy color - it would be nice to have that on my wrist for a change.

New: Wedding Dress Inspired Invitation Suite

Here it is - my sister's wedding invitation! (My sister and her fiance, I should say.) I took cues from Katie's gorgeous wedding dress that I just love love love (can't share pics of that just yet!) and the super talented & super sweet Bryn of Paperfinger here in Brooklyn did the calligraphy, which was then letterpressed into off-white thick cotton paper. Pretty stunning, if I do say so myself:)

See more images that Bryn has posted on her blog paper tastebuds, here.

Karen Barbour for the NYTimes

I LOVE this illustration by Karen Barbour from Sunday's New York Times, Week in Review section. I didn't even realize the article was written by renowned chef Dan Barber of Blue Hill and Blue Hill at Stone Barns. I just wanted to snag the paper for the artwork. Reminds me of Patricia Curtan's work in Alice Waters' Chez Panisse Vegetables that I love so much.

Lemonade

This trailer gave me the chills.

Synopsis reads: More than 70,000 advertising professionals have lost their jobs in this 'Great Recession.' Lemonade is about what happens when people who were once paid to be creative in advertising are forced to be creative with their own lives.

Weekend in Photos: Lake Michigan

I was in Michigan this weekend for my sister's bridal shower, hosted by her fiance's mom & sister. I had heard so much about this great spot on Lake Michigan where he spent his summers growing up - and his grandparents and his mother. Everyone says it's hard to explain - but it was best put by someone over the weekend who said it's like Dirty Dancing. And it kinda is. There's the men's doubles tennis tournament, the weekly Bingo nights, the walk up to Green Mountain - which is less green & more of a gigantic dune, the $1 ice cream stand, the bonfires on the beach and the end of summer dance. There's something so special about a place where your grandparents met their best friends, and your parents met theirs, and you have yours. It's like a huge family reuinon. And as a first-time weekend visitor, it really feels like that.

We tried to spend most of our time outside - morning runs, walks on the beach, tennis, dips in the lake, al fresco parties. And when it rained, we went into Saugatuck to visit Michigan's own American Spoon for their famous dried cherries & yummy jams.

I'd go back in a heartbeat.

And for the record, (and mostly for East-Coasters) Lake Michigan really is like the ocean - without the salty water or the (slightly irrational) fear of sharks or (more plausible) fear of getting bit by a crab. My family would kill me, but lakes are pretty awesome.

From the Desk Fridays: A Letter from Nestle

My aunt recently gave my sister an album of things she had found of my mom's. There's nothing better than pictures of my mom I've never seen before. This letter from Nestle was in the album. Interesting huh? I love the Don Draper-ness of it. And of course the faded envelope color and the address without a house number or zip code.

Thinking About...

...my sister's bridal shower that I'm hosting in our backyard at the end of the month. And how we must have paper pom poms. Lots of em.

But it looks like Martha Stewart Crafts is sold out of them. Suggestions?

Sticky Notes

While I could do without the lame acting in this video - I do love the effect of over 200,000 sticky notes dancing.

Twitter: Fresh From the Oven Tweets

I'm fairly new to Twitter - and admittedly don't love tweeting my every move - but I do love this: Baker Tweet. Digital creative agency Poke developed a system for Albion Cafe in London that doesn't require a computer (since they don't mix well with flour) - but rather just the turn of a dial to whatever baked good is hot out of the oven & the press of a button to tweet it to all its followers. So smart. And great for Poke, conveniently located across the street.
