Weekend in Lake Placid

We headed up to Lake Placid this weekend to visit Nonno. We took the kids on a couple boat rides where Griffin shared his cookies with Nonno, went fishing (but the fish were "sleeping"), and tried to take some photos with the real camera - which Griffin loved.

What a beautiful weekend to be on the water, in the woods!

ps - Louise kills me with this bow hat. Thanks Aunt Les:)

Fear

I am the worst flyer in the world thanks to the flight from hell at 15 when the oxygen masks dropped & people cried all around me. I thought I was going to die that day, and now I do every day I step onto a plane. So grim. My palms are sweating right now just thinking about it. And as you can imagine, I'm the worst passenger ever. Ask my husband & his poor hand. You'd basically rather sit next to a crying baby than me. Or the lady who barfed into a ziplock bag ten times on my flight once. You'd rather that rankness. Trust me. It's bad.

This past weekend, we left our kids for the first time since Louise was born to go to my cousin's wedding Atlanta, and flying without kids only makes this anxiety worse. My wacko brain immediately goes into worst case scenario mode & I picture my kids without parents -- something I'm unfortunately too familiar with. Again, grim. I know.

But this weekend, our flights to & from Atlanta were smooth. Smooth, I tell you. I never say that. And for the first time in my whole life, when were approaching New York City on the flight home, I was actually kind of, well thrilled, to be flying 10,000 ft in the air. It was a cloudless day, and as we approached the city, we flew over Brooklyn and could see our building! where I knew both kids were likely sleeping at the time. We then flew over the Hudson river, where I quickly snapped the above photo of the Manhattan and Brooklyn Bridges. I felt like we were on our very own tour of the city as we kept going north, watching the yellow cabs going up & down Broadway, spotting MSG, then Central Park and Yankees Stadium.  It was... cool.

I can only hope this is a sign of a dwindling fear. Or at least a new perspective on flying. Makes me wonder what other fears I have that could turn into magical moments...

Cowboy Griff

We were in Wyoming last weekend for my best friend's wedding - the most beautiful wedding I've ever attended, including my own. It was everything a wedding should be - so much shared love, committing to each other, supported by & cheered on by the closest of friends & family, a casual come-as-you-are vibe that puts everyone at ease. No dress code - other than the suggested Carharts & hoodies (she's run a horse ranch for an outdoor education program for the past five years) - the preferred dress out in WY. A sign-up board for bartending (John & our good friend took the 10:30pm shift) and a potluck dessert table (that included our friends' awesome homemade butterfingers!) helped keep it intimate & super special. We stayed in one of the only heated rooms on the ranch & Griffin was in absolute heaven - sticking his fingers in the horses' nostrils, giving the miniature baby donkeys lots of kisses, hamming it up in the cook house. Wyoming, we miss you. Congrats J&L - we love you!

Weekend Down South

I was at a wedding this weekend at the Greenbrier in West Virginia - a hotel with rich history and distinct decor thanks to Dorothy Draper. The look is pretty dense (patterns on nearly every surface), but I can't help but be attracted to the bold color choices & layering of patterns. My older sister wore a dress that matched the carpet so much we joked that we'd never find her if she passed out. The place is a feast for the eyes and for me, was a nice breather after a busy week at the show.

Dear Beach, I miss you.

A few weeks ago, we took our first kid-free vacation to St. Lucia. Now that life is back to its hectic usual self, I thought I'd post some pics to remind myself that sitting on the beach all day actually did happen. My favorite time of day was just after sunset, when the sky & sea turn to shades of blue & gray and the light danced on the water. Ending the day with a beer on the beach was cool too :)

Sledding

We were up in Lake Placid last weekend, visiting Griffin's grandparents, and took him on his first sleigh ride. He didn't love getting in the sled, but as you can see, he loved it once we got going.

A Visit: Blue Hill at Stone Barns

John & I had our 5 year wedding anniversary a few weeks ago and to celebrate, we treated ourselves to a night away at an inn about an hour north of the city. On the way, we stopped at Blue Hill at Stone Barns. We've never toured the property before & it was fantastic. Almost every part of their farm is open to visitors, so you can see all the food up close - the arugula, the herbs, the pigs, the chicken & the turkeys (getting ready for Thanksgiving!). It was a great day - I'd highly recommend a visit. The night away was great as well - and also highly recommended:)

Mara Sprafkin & Charlottesville

Sorry for the lack of posts this week. Griffin & I have been so sick! (Having your happy baby not smile for 24hrs is the saddest thing ever!) But we're finally on the mend & able to take our trip out of town. We're heading down to Charlottesville, VA today to visit John's sister & her family as well as John's parents. Charlottesville is such a cute town. Plus, their spring starts earlier, so I'm hoping for some jacket-free fun. While we're there, I want to stop in to see Mara Sprafkin's work at the 2nd Street Gallery. She's working on a community based public art project honoring Charlottesville's namesake, Queen Charlotte. Sneak peek of Mara's work, above. Paul said this will be up all over Charlottesville. I can't wait to see!

Hope you all are doing something fun this weekend!

Oh, Hello!

I'm officially the worst blogger ever. I go on vacation & I leave you hanging. With a post about chocolate of all things! I hope I haven't made you hungry for the past week! I promise to be better.

We were in Florida last week. Vacation with a little one is definitely different, but 80 degrees and sunshine makes up for the early wake-up calls and no trashy mag reading. I always forget how good it feels to be away and even more so how refreshed and recharged I feel coming home. I've got a head full of ideas and ready to dive in!

From the {Beach} Fridays: Maine: Belly Shadow

I catch my growing profile in window reflections (or knock into tables) and can hardly believe I'm this pregnant. And getting bigger by the day. Or big meal.

I caught myself yesterday on the beach & smiled. I know it's part of me, but seeing this new shape stare back at me makes me stop in my tracks every time. A belly shadow was a new one for me, so I thought I'd share.

We're headed south today to meet up with my family for our annual "Birthday Weekend" - which started with me & my dad (who's birthday is today) and now includes my nephew, who was born on my birthday three years ago, Saturday. It' one of my favorite weekends of the year, hands down, and I cannot wait.

Have a great weekend, everyone!

Maine: For the Dog

For my birthday, I asked to go to Maine - for some heat relief, a little fresh air & before I get too uncomfortable to be in a car for six hours. We brought Kingsley with us & it's turning into a trip for her. And before my eyes, we're turning into those people. We're staying at an inn that loves dogs. Not only did she get her own confirmation email (Dear Kingsley, We're looking forward to having you stay with us. Please remind your parents to keep you on your leash, yada, yada, yada...) but in our room, she got her own towel, tennis ball, and moose cookie with her name on it. As I type this, she's snacking on one of the moose cookie legs. Needlesstosay, she's loving her mama's birthday trip:) and so am I.

Wild Wild West

Hello everyone! I'm still a bit sleepy from long flight delays & getting in late last night, but I wanted to share a few horsie shots from visiting my friend who lives on & manages a horse ranch in Wyoming for the National Outdoor Leadership School. It was my last big trip before the baby comes this fall & I loved every second of being in the open sky, sunshine, cool nights, and even horsie-smelling air. I'm not very comfortable around horses (for some reason, I always feel like they're going to kick or trample me), but this trip had me warming up to the big guys.

This one, above right, is Leo. Leo came to the ranch last August as a wild mustang & is a total sweetheart. He came down with a little infection while I was there, so we were out in the pasture vetting him every day. Well, I wasn't - but I was petting him, which I'm sure helped:) That's his buddy Squirt, who stayed by his side the whole time - so cute. It's nice to be home, clean & showered, but I'm kinda missing these guys this morning.
